There are 660 artists exhibiting at the American Craft Baltimore Show this year. Ten of them were honored with awards on Friday. ACC partnered with the James Renwick Alliance, the Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG). SNAG’s honor went to jewelry artist Lynda Bahr. “In a field of over 600 artists, your work truly stood out for your masterful combination of tradition and the unexpected.” said Christopher Amundsen, Executive Director, American Craft Council. This mixed metals ring features sterling silver rails and band under mosaic patterning. Three cutout windows with 18k cross members. Mosaic pattern is made from 22k and 18k yellow gold, 14k rose, green, and white gold. Sterling silver with patina. Mokume Gane is in the stripe and wood grain patterning. The Mokume Gane contains the additional element of Shakudo which is a gold and copper alloy. This ring has one .65 carat square rustic diamond. The application of the mosaic pattern varies from ring to ring so each is a unique piece of artwork.

The existing band in this project was an 8mm mosaic band with five melee diamonds scattered around the band. The customer saw this ring paired with a plain engagement band with a 1/4 carat brilliant diamond mounted on a diagonal like the rustic diamond is shown. She did not want to purchase two rings but liked the diagonal mounting of the stone. So the final design was taking the existing band and mounting a rustic diamond on a diagonal to the front of the ring.

This ring is a one of a kind and a size: 9

A customer saw my large pear rustic diamond mounted on a 12mm wide band but did not feel she could wear a ring that wide. It is almost impossible to find those stones as an exact match. I took the existing stone off my 12mm ring design and designed an 8mm band that mimicked the mosaic patterning in the original ring. It was rendered in a smaller scale she felt she could wear. This is a photoshop rendering showing how the new design would look in a 8mm band.

This 6mm wide band features 14k white gold rails and sterling band under the mosaic. The ring has ten cutout windows of varying sizes circling the ring. The mosaic is made from: 22k yellow, 14k rose and green gold and Mokume Gane overlays. The stripe patterning is Mokume Gane and made with shadudo (a gold and copper alloy) The wood grain pattern is made with 18k green, 14k rose and 14k white golds The ring has three white baguette diamonds and three Rose cut square diamonds in grey green hues.

The customer had a ring from her mother with baguette diamonds and sapphires. She wanted a ring made from some of the stones in her mother’s ring. We chose the 3 baguette diamonds and paired them with square rose cut diamonds to come up with the design below.
